Your Christian Cowboy Resource

Bookstores are full of books about getting ahead, succeeding, getting whatever we're after or improving our lives. They have entire sections built around “self-help”. There's a key word in there that points out the fundamental problem that makes for Christians: “self”.

These books and this way of thinking make it about ourselves and for Christians, it has us trying to bend God's will to our own. In many cases, this teaching has us acting like we're bigger than God as we actually try to use will power, positive thinking and mental training to change outcomes to from failure to success.

The problem is, we're following our goals and our desires, not God's and we're trying to do it our way, not His.

John 3:30 He must increase, but I must decrease

John tells us something very simple. It's about God, not us. God and His plans must become more important.

These self-help and laws of attraction authors and public speakers are not writing from an understanding of who God is. Even though they can show you success stories of people who have followed their teaching, you've got to remember one very important point: for them, as men and women who have never experienced a life-changing relationship with Jesus Christ, this is as good as their life is going to get. They really are experiencing their “Best Life Now”. Some of us might struggle in life, but when our hope is in Christ, however good or bad we feel life is here at times, we have our best, perfect and eternal life yet to come in Heaven while they are destined for hell. That's not a judgment, it's simply how it works and as Christians, instead of putting them down for their false teaching, our hearts should break for them.

1 Peter 1: 1-4 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you,

To simply these verses, Peter is making it clear that our hope is in heaven.

So as Christians, why do we seek more from sources that aren't Biblically-based?

Proverbs 4:23 Keep your heart with all vigilance,
for from it flow the springs of life.

We're warned to guard our hearts. We have to protect them from what we take in because when we let God be our influence, especially through His word in the Bible, so much can come out of us to positively impact the people around us.

Then Matthew warns us that those things that are not of God will be 'rooted up' (destroyed) and refers to those that would teach other than from God's word that they are the blind leading the blind. Those that follow this stuff are being led toward potential destruction.

Matthew 15:13-14 “Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be rooted up.14Let them alone; they are blind guides. And if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.”

But when we understand the importance of Scripture, the bigger question is, why would we want to follow anything else?

2 Timothy 3:16-17 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

The Bible is God's living word to us and we're being told that it is good for everything from teaching and correcting us to preparing us for every good thing we might do. If we're following God's word, we don't need all this other self-help stuff

I haven't encountered a life situation yet that the Bible didn't have an answer for and when trying to figure out if I'm following God's plan for my life, I've found proof of it in Scripture.

The new ‘positives’ to take away:

God gave us His living word through the Bible to equip us for everything that we need. We need to let go of the ideas that aren’t from God and apply the ones that we learn are from Him
